Peter Heltzel is a fisheries scientist and project manager with Taylor
Associates, Inc. He has thirteen years of professional experience in fisheries biology. He is highly experienced with theory, techniques, and instrumentation for assessing fisheries resources and has over six years experience in writing ESA, NEPA, SEPA documents, related permitting correspondence, scientific papers, and project reports. He is also a WSDOT senior author for writing biological assessment. In the field, Mr. Heltzel is an expert at obtaining juvenile salmonid stomach contents using the non-lethal method of gastric lavage and is experienced in building gastric lavage kits. Prior to joining Taylor Associates, Inc., Mr. Heltzel managed the fisheries and water quality aspects for the estuary restoration effectiveness monitoring projects in the lower Columbia River. As a scientist with the firm, Mr. Heltzel manages a number of environmental monitoring and evaluation projects. He provides oversight and guidance to project staff regarding the biology of marine and freshwater fishes. He is involved upfront with developing new project proposals, designing and implementing monitoring programs for assigned projects, analyzing data, as well as writing final project reports. He is the lead on all biological permitting and compliance duties for Taylor Associates, Inc. and is responsible for ensuring all biological projects meet federal, state, and local permitting requirements.
